When unpacking donations at Muswell Hill’s Oxfam Bookshop, volunteers have come across greetings cards, baby scans and even a death certificate before. However earlier this month nestled in a set of donated music magazines they discovered a GCE certificate, from 1979.

The University of London accredited certificate dates from an era when Margaret Thatcher had appeared on the steps of Downing Street a month before, and Queen were in the charts with ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’.

Meanwhile, at Ealing College’s Upper School, Jack Zilkha had sat his exams in Commerce, Economics, and six other subjects.

Miranda Platt, manager at the shop on Muswell Hill Broadway, has been trying to trace the owner. “We’ve put the photo up on social media, and had it by the tills. It’s quite upsetting when you can’t find owners for things like this, which might have really personal memories.”
