Mulled Wine Recipe

Mulled WineServes 10Christmas carols, hot mulled wine and warm mince pies – the quintessential elements of a traditional English Christmas.2 x 75cl bottles of a medium to full-bodied red wine1 orange, studded with cloves2 cinnamon sticks4 oranges, sliced8tbsp granulated sugarWhole nutmeg, for grating2tbsp brandyPut all the ingredients in a saucepan along with 1.2 litres of water, then bring up to simmering point, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. Keep it at barely simmering point for at least 20 minutes – but do not boil or all the alcohol will evaporate. This can be made in advance, then reheated just before serving in mugs or sturdy wine glasses.
