For an evening in October the usually lively clubhouse at Highgate Golf Club will close its doors to post-game banter and celebrate the 251st birthday of W A Mozart with a recital to raise funds for the Camphill Village in St Albans, a now regular event organised by club member and local businessman George Meyer.
Camphill is a global movement of 90 communities, of which 47 are in the UK. They provide development programmes for all age groups of people who suffer from learning and related disabilities.
This may mean helping with household chores, teaching, administrative work, therapies, working in the gardens, on the farms and estates, or in a workshop. Everyone takes part in the varied cultural and social life of the community and in the on-going education programmes.
George, who discovered the Camphill Village in St Albans almost by accident, has made this his sole charitable objective and has raised tens of thousands to support it.
"Last year with the sale of tickets and an auction offering a range of very unusual lots, we were able to raise almost £40,000 and I am hopeful that we will do as well this year.
"Our musicians for an all Mozart programme include the violinists Jack Liebeck and Ruth Rogers, the cellist Adrian Brendel and the clarinetist Thomas Hull. A violist has yet to be confirmed.
"Two of the works on the programme will be Mozart's String Quartet dedicated to Josef Haydn and his ever popular Clarinet Quintet," adds George.
The evening kicks off at 6.45pm on Saturday, October 6, with a pre-concert glass of champagne and concludes with a post-concert buffet with wine and the auction. £60 tickets are available only by post from George Meyer, 8 Highgate Close, London N6 4SD.
