A competition has been launched to celebrate the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare.

Young people from across north London are being invited to take part in the competition, run by Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in Wood Green.

Called Shakespeare Uploaded, the competition is open to 14 to 18-year-olds, and an iPad is up for grabs for the winner.

Participants must upload a short video of themselves performing a Shakespeare speech or poem.

All videos will be available to view online through Mountview’s YouTube channel, and then judged by a panel of professional actors and directors on July 17.

Videos lasting up to 90 seconds can be filmed on camera phones and should contain one performer speaking straight to camera.

Mountview’s artistic director Stephen Jameson said: “There is no right or wrong here, we aren’t looking for a classic polished Shakespeare performance.

“We want to see your creativity at work and to see you perform Shakespeare in a way that means something to you.

“Whether your character is a lover, a king, a fool or a warrior, any accent or style will work – just make it yours.”
