Members of the armed forces from the Jewish and Islamic faiths joined forces to brighten the days of residents at a Swiss Cottage care home last weekend with an entertaning evening talk.
As part of the tenth annual Mitzvah Day – which is the UK’s biggest faith-based day of of volunteering set for November 18 – soldiers visited Spring Grove Care Home in Finchley Road.
Those present included serving and retired soldiers including Imam Asim Hafiz OBE – Islamic adviser to the Chief of the Defence Staff –and Rabbi (Major) Reuben Livingstone, the armed forces’ senior Jewish chaplain.
Imam Hafiz said: “Evenings like this remind us how much more we can achieve when we stand together.
“This year’s Mitzvah Day is particularly poignant in light of the horrific shooting in the Pittsburgh synagogue.”
Mitzvah Day founder and chair Laura Marks said: “Having Muslim and Jewish military personnel giving up their valuable free time and coming to visit elderly residents of Spring Grove sends a powerful message.”
