A historic pub in South End Green will close its doors this weekend after being bought by a developer.

The Magdala, in South Hill Park – famously where the last woman to be hanged in Britain, Ruth Ellis, shot her boyfriend – will shut at 4pm on Sunday.

Outgoing landlady Christiane Baehr said the new owner plans to keep it as a pub, though there is no set date for re-opening.

On Facebook, she posted: “We’ve had an amazing journey here and would like to thank all who supported us, enjoyed our hospitality and ultimately became our friends.”

An action group has been formed to preserve the pub and is applying to have it listed as an “asset of community value”.
