ERIC Moonman is a former Labour MP who lives in Camden Town. He chaired a debate between the Hampstead and Kilburn candidates at the Belsize Square Synagogue where they outlined their election proposals and promises on Thursday. Nationally he would like Labour to win but believes the trade unions could be the party's downfall.

"There have been too many setbacks over the last few months for Labour," he said. "Such as the economic situation and the inability of some trade unions to recognise that even more important than getting a better pay deal is the chance that the opposition will take power.

"I believe the Tories will win but Labour has got to try to get the debate much more around its strengths as well as show people that the economic crisis is not due to government policy but is a worldwide issue.

"It has to show that the government is much more experienced than a Conservative one. If Labour cannot get its message across then I think the Conservatives will win but only with a small majority. "And the fault will lie with the trade unions not Gordon Brown because they are living in a dream world."

On the possibility of a hung parliament he said: "I do not think alliances between parties work. What this country needs is security not more uncertainty or imbalance from a two party system in power."

On the Hampstead and Kilburn debate, he said: "There are two young candidates in Hampstead and Kilburn who will no doubt do well in party political matters whether they win or not and Glenda Jackson. I still find it quite extraordinary when looking up Glenda's CV in Who's Who to see her enormous achievements in a totally different profession.
