In a feisty television encounter with Andrew Neill, he said: 'If Labour and the Lib Dems can do a deal and if the Tories can't form a government, then that's an option. All the party leaders are going to have to reflect on the result.
'But not that long ago every single commentator was saying that the Tories were home and dry. They are not where they want to be tonight. This is certainly not the end of New Labour'.
