Two senior Camden politicians have urged home secretary Theresa May to stop a far-right Hungarian politician entering the UK, amid fears he plans to stage a rally in the borough on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day.
Holborn and St Pancras MP Frank Dobson and London Assembly Member Andrew Dismore have both written to the home secretary asking her to exclude Gabor Vona from the country.
They believe the leader of the far-right Jobbik Party, which holds three seats in the European parliament and 44 in the Hungarian parliament, is preparing to stage a rally in Holborn on Sunday.
Mr Dismore told the Ham&High that it is not known what exactly is planned for Sunday, only that there is a Facebook page inviting Mr Vona’s supporters to meet at Holborn Tube station at 1.30pm.
He said police are looking into the matter, adding that Mr Vona “has no place coming here on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day to spread his message of hate”.
Mr Dobson, who described Mr Vona as a “neo-Nazi” in his letter sent to Mrs May today, said the Jobbik Party “stirs up hatred and violence against Jews and Roma, and... its paramilitaries have been blamed by Hungarian police for murders of Roma”.
He wrote: “To propose a neo-Nazi rally in our area on January 26 seems a deliberate provocation as the main Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration is to be launched the next day at King’s Cross.”
He continued: “It is always worth remembering that Hitler’s genocide didn’t begin with the Holocaust. It began with abuse and name calling.”
A Home Office spokesman said: “We do not comment on individual cases or if someone is under consideration for exclusion.”
