Sir Keir Starmer, Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, will join Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet after being appointed a shadow Home Office minister this afternoon.

His appointment will come as no surprise to many political commentators as Sir Keir has been tipped to rise rapidly through the Labour ranks since before he even won his seat at the May election due to his previous high profile career as Director of Public Prosecutions.

He told the Ham&High he was looking forward to the task ahead and tweeted: “Delighted to be appointed as a shadow home office minister and to join Labour’s front bench: much to be done @CamdenLabour”.

Sir Keir had backed Andy Burnham for leader but maintained he would be happy to work with whoever was appointed leader.

Although a new MP, his considerable experience in the law made him an obvious choice for a Home Office shadow role, where he will work alongside new Shadow Home Secretary, Mr Burnham.

Sir Keir had backed Andy Burnham for leader but always maintained he would be happy to work with whoever was appointed leader.

The Leeds born MP had called for unity in the Labour Party amid fears of rifts and back room plots following Mr Corbyn’s decisive win in the leadership race, where he won almost 60 per cent of the vote but only sixteen of his own MPs are thought to have voted for him.

Sir Keir also won a ballot for a ten-minute rule bill, whereby MPs get to speak in the House for ten minutes with the aim of introducing a new law.

He will attempt to bring in a new Victims’ Law Bill to help those who have suffered sexual abuse receive better treatment, and will introduce it to the House on October 20.
