Georgia Gould has been elected as the new leader of Camden Council.
The Kentish Town councillor, who was previously cabinet member for young people, adult social care and health, said it was a “privilege” to be picked by Labour colleagues to replace Sarah Hayward on Tuesday.
Cllr Gould, who is the daughter of Labour grandees Lord Philip Gould and Baroness Gail Rebuck, was first elected in 2010 aged 24.
The author, public speaker and landlady told the Ham&High she wanted to build on Camden’s “proud history of diversity”.
Labour London Assembly Member for Barnet and Camden Andrew Dismore welcomed Cllr Gould’s elevation.
He said: “I am sure Georgia will do an excellent job leading the council: she is tenacious, hard-working and understands well the challenges the council will face.
“She is part of the new generation of very talented young Labour councillors who are already making a mark on London.”
He added that Cllr Hayward was “recognised as one of the best council leaders in the country”.
“She led the council through an extremely challenging period, as the government cut millions of pounds from the council’s budget, and tough choices had to be made,” he said.
“I think Sarah managed the change well, and encouraged the council to be innovative, making the most of the resources they had.
“I wish her well for her future.”
She was also congratulated by Highgate councillor Sian Berry, who is standing for the Greens in Holborn and St Pancras in the general election.
