Roads across Barnet are set to receive a multimillion pound makeover.

Barnet Council has launched a five-year £50million investment programme to upgrade the borough’s roads and pavements.

Work has already begun on this year’s projects, which will see the council invest £6.8m to upgrade pavements, £5.4m on ensuring the borough’s roads are of good quality and £2.8m on other projects such as repainting road markings and repairing structures.

The borough-wide improvement works will be managed by Re*, a joint venture between the council and private contractor Capita, which also carried out an extensive assessment of the borough’s roads and pavements earlier this year.

Over 130 areas have been prioritised for work with a particular focus on roads with potholes and prevention treatment work to roads that have been difficult to repair in the past.

Cllr Dean Cohen, chairman of the council’s environment committee, said: “We know the standard of our roads and pavements is a top priority for our residents, which is why we are rolling out this investment programme.”
