One of Camden’s most Europhile councillors will not seek re-election as a Conservative in 2018 because of his anger at how some within the party behaved during the Referendum campaign.

Andrew Marshall, who represents Swiss Cottage, worked tirelessly for the cross-party Stronger In campaign, standing outside Waitrose in Finchley Road for the entire working day last Thursday in a last-ditch bid to persuade voters of the benefits of the EU.

He was left bitterly disappointed as the results from around the country came in on Thursday night, as it became increasingly clear that London’s desire to remain was at odds with much of the rest of the UK.

After two days of reflection, Cllr Marshall said on Twitter yesterday: “After 22 years I will not seek re-election as a Conservative Councillor in 2018. Parts of my party bear great responsibility for this crisis.”
