Hornsey and Wood Green MP Lynne Featherstone has called on Haringey to start fining its waste contractors after more than a year of complaints by residents.
Ms Featherstone has written to Haringey Council chief executive Nick Walkley to ask him to consider fining Veolia for poor performance and breach of service terms.
The Ham&High has reported concerns from residents, ranging from late collections to oversized “Dalek wheelie bins” ruining the street in The Miltons in Highgate.
Ms Featherstone has received “hundreds” of complaints in the two years since Veolia was awarded the contract, ranging from unpredictable and patchy collections, difficulties with getting bins, mess left behind after collections and a poor follow-up service when complaints are made.
She added: “Many residents have very serious complaints. Disabled residents have been unable to get out of their driveways, and some residents have had to deal with rat infestations. Enough is enough.”
A Haringey Council spokesman said it takes “all complaints seriously”. He said: “There are a range of performance targets on collections, resident satisfaction and handling complaints in Veolia’s contract with the council, which result in deductions if targets are not met.”
