A CHINESE man who bludgeoned to death a reclusive Hampstead author faces life behind bars.

At the Old Bailey today (Friday), 47-year-old Wang Yam was convicted of the murder of Allan Chappelow, whose body was found battered in his run-down house on Downshire Hill .

Following a dramatic trial and retrial in which much of the evidence was heard 'in camera' for reasons of national security, Yam will discover his fate on Monday after the jury convicted him by a 9-1 majority verdict.

Yam was judged to have killed the 86-year-old author in an attempt to steal his identity and bank funds. The Chinese national and his pregnant girlfriend were surviving at the time on just £900 a month, and were facing eviction from their flat a few streets away in Denning Road.
