Nick Russell came home with a narrow margin - just 76 votes - over his nearest rival Awale Olad of the Labour party.

In third place was the Green party's Victoria Green, while the Conservatives lagged into fourth place ahead of the BNP and UK Independence Party.

It is the second time the Lib Dems have won a by-election within a month, with Linda Chung the new councillor for nearby Hampstead.

The Kentish Town by-election was forced after it emerged former Lib Dem councillor Philip Thompson was representing his constituents while 5,500 miles away on a PhD course in Tucson, Arizona.
