LOCAL Liberal Democrats have attacked a council advertising campaign - saying it costs taxpayers 264,000.

Crouch End councillor and scrutiny committee member David Winskill said cash spent on the "My Haringey" campaign could have been better spent.

"In scrutiny, our business is to ensure that money is spent wisely and it is very hazy how this project will be evaluated and what its objectives are," he said.

Lib Dem leader Cllr Robert Gorrie added: "To launch a new advertising campaign, in what residents must hope is the last six months of a 40-year administration, is a desperate attempt by Labour to cling on to power. This project has no real objectives, no clear management and fails to provide any benefit to local residents."

But Labour's community cohesion and involvement boss Cllr Kaushika Amin said the cost this year was 132,000 and a decision about continuing the campaign would be based on resident feedback, which had so far been positive. "The council takes very seriously residents' right to be kept informed about services and how to access them," he said.

"Yet again, the Lib Dems are doing what they do best - talking down our borough, our homes, our communities and our people.

"We're proud of Haringey, of the people who live here and the people who took part in the campaign. We have a vision for the future and we think it's important people understand that together we are moving forward.

"If the Lib Dems don't see a better future, then I can't understand why people would vote for them.
