Liberal Democrat Laura Edge was the first candidate to arrive at the North London Business Centre in New Southgate for the Finchley and Golders Green count.

She is putting on a brave face despite the disappointing exit polls which show the Lib Dems may be in for a disappointing night.

Ms Edge said: 'It's far too early to say. We don't yet know our percentage share of the vote and we know the electoral system we have is deeply flawed. These are only exit polls and they may well be just another reflection of this flawed system.

'I'm hanging on to see what our share of the vote will be.'

Conservative Mike Freer is the hot favourite to win the seat once held by Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher.
