AMERICAN rock star Lenny Kravitz has invited a Muswell Hill photographer to contribute to his new book.

The New York-based singer, who has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, will publish a book next year to celebrate two decades of success in the music industry.

Kravitz's hits include tracks such as Are You Gonna Go My Way and the Grammy-winning Fly Away.

The singer has invited David Hindley to contribute photographs for the book, which he shot during their two decades of working together.

Mr Hindley, 43, was introduced to Kravitz through a mutual friend in the 1980s and has worked with him ever since. Most recently, he took photos of Kravitz in the Brazilian jungle for the cover of his album It Is Time For A Love Revolution, which was released in January.

Hindley's previous muses include the likes of David Bowie and Mick Jagger, but he is determined not to be typecast - and is equally at ease photographing women in a burlesque club to snapping eye-catching travel photos.

"I find there's a tendency to pigeonhole photographers, but I'm just interested in people. I love the alternative scene. But whether it's that or something more mainstream, I'm lucky because people tend to relax for me when they're in front of the camera."

Originally from Ashton-under-Lyne in Manchester, Mr Hindley moved to London to work as a freelance assistant to photographers. He has worked as an assistant to various big names, including Eve Arnold. Photography has proved an invaluable communication tool for Hindley, who struggled with dyslexia at school. "I was never going to make it along the academic route, but my dad was an amateur photographer and from an early age he instilled a love of photography in me," Hindley said.

In spite of the glamorous rock star lifestyle that he has been exposed to, one of Mr Hindley's greatest enjoyments is relaxing in Muswell Hill with his wife Nives and their one-year-old son, Devon.

"I love Muswell Hill because it feels like old London which hasn't been affected by the corporate high street. There's air to breath and an interesting mix of artistic people including writers, actors and musicians," he said.
