One of the issues cited by Cllr Hoque as causing him to leave Labour, was the situation in Gaza. I hope this does not signal the start of religion-based politics in Camden.
I was rather alarmed to see a recent Lib Dem leaflet issued in Redbridge, which has a large Muslim population, depicting a severely injured child, an anti-Israel message and an an exhortation to vote Lib Dem - clearly aimed at Muslim voters.
Whatever one's views on Gaza, I hope we can all agree that war and conflict in another country should not be used for narrow party political gain in the UK.
Real political leadership should be about healing divisions, and not callously playing on racial and religious tensions to gain votes.
It would therefore be good if Cllr Hoque would join me in condemning such cynical and divisive tactics, and attempting to restrain his new party from behaving so irresponsibly in the future.
