Speakers from around the world will come together to discuss how to build a more caring society at the International Women’s Conference at Hampstead Town Hall this weekend.
Organised by the Global Women’s Strike, (GWS), participating organisations include Women against Rape, the English Collective of Prostitutes, Mothers At Home Matter and Queer Strike.
Speakers with local links include Selma James, who co-ordinates the GWS, based at the Kentish Town Women’s Centre. Ms James founded the International Wages for Housework Campaign.
Internationally known speakers include Alexia Tsouni, a human rights activist from Greece, and Catherine Healy, co-ordinator of the New Zealand Prostitutes Collective, who led a successful campaign to decriminalise prostitution.
An exhibition by the Crossroads Centre will feature historically important local women, including Jenny Marx, Winnifred Blackman and Sylvia Pankhurst.
Subjects under discussion include valuing the work of stay-at-home mothers and carers and the fight for equal pay.
