On Thursday evening around 8pm I finally cracked and a bewildered canvasser got a dressing down. I am 81 and crippled with arthritis. My husband is over 90 and very deaf. We so arrange our lives that the evenings after 6pm are slump time and this was the second or third time I had heaved myself out of my chair and answered the door.
And every post in the past week has brought an interesting looking letters that informed us, yet again, how diligent, intelligent and compassionate a particular candidate was. We have a postal vote so all these efforts were useless. Perhaps the data base could be marked in some way: 'here be dragons' would be one suggestion. Pestering does not pay. We did vote but our enthusiasm for local politics is now muted.
