THE Hampstead Garden Suburb Horticultural Society has been awarded a London Gardens Society silver medal.

The honour was received at The Guildhall on October 16 in recognition for the raised flowerbed in Willifield Green.

The flowerbed was designed by Stephen Crisp and members of the society to commemorate the Suburb's centenary. It was unveiled by society honorary presidents, and husband and wife team, Jonathan Ross and Jane Goldman.

Chairman Michael Franklin said: "We knew we had been shortlisted for a medal, but only found out that we had achieved the silver when I was called up for the presentation.

"We are absolutely delighted. Stephen Crisp's stunning and colourful new design for this year - a mixture of dahlias, begonias, box balls and other plants in almost shocking colour combinations - has been giving pleasure to residents for several months now and will do so until the first frosts kill it off."

Next year the horticultural society itself will be 100 years old and a string of special events are being planned.
