Reckless Abandon is fancied to continue his unbeaten record in his seasonal comeback in the Betfred Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.

The Clive Cox-trained three-year-old was in sublime form last year, winning all of his five starts, including two Group 1 and a brace of Group 2 races to amass £358,000 in prize money.

All of those victories were over five or six furlongs and connections this season opted to steer away from the 2,000 Guineas – which is contested over a mile – in favour of sprinting.

“He’s clearly strengthened again but we’ve done enough sensible work to tell us that his whole approach and attitude are suited to speed,” Cox said.

The son of Exchange Rate is also set to benefit from a 4lb weight for age allowance over the bulk of a field that includes favourite Sole Power, who is good value at around 4-1.

Elsewhere, Aidan O’Brien has abundant options in the Irish 2000 Guineas, with eight possible runners at the time Horse Talk went to press.

Yet it may be worth plumping for Cristoforo Colombo, who was fifth behind Dawn Approach in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and has been backed into 3-1 for the Irish equivalent.

Meanwhile, no valid rival to Investec Derby favourite Dawn Approach was unearthed in any of the key trials for the big race at Epsom on June 1, and he is now as short as 10-11 with William Hill.
