A synagogue has held workshops for teenagers so they can learn more about the Holocaust.

About 500 pupils, aged between 13 and 15, from schools such as La Sainte Union, Highgate Road, Highgate and South Hampstead High School, Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, attended Lessons from the Holocaust at the Belsize Square Synagogue, in Belsize Square, Belsize Park.

The sessions introduced the teenagers to Jewish practices, the story of Anne Frank and the experiences of survivors and refugees.

The event has been running for more than a decade and was established after the Holocaust became part of the national curriculum. Co-organiser Sue Leon said: “I’m very proud of the event. It’s always been a great success and we have had a huge response from schools.”

Planning is now underway for the next session of events and an outreach programme is available for schools that cannot transport pupils to the synagogue.
