Two choral societies have penned pieces to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and are staging special concerts to celebrate the anniversary.

The Highgate Choral Society’s conductor Ronal Corp has written This Sceptr’d Isle to honour Elizabeth II’s 60 year reign.

The conductor, who in perfect timing was awarded an OBE at Buckingham Palace on Thursday (May 31), hopes the monarch herself will attend its debut performance.

He told the Ham&High: “I am very honoured to receive the OBE and I am crossing my fingers that it is the Queen who gives it to me.

“If she does, I am sure I will only be have just a few moments with her but it would be quite fun to tell her I have written a piece about her and invite her to come along and hear it.”

The classical music maestro said the Queen’s unswerving dedication to the country moved him to compose the score, which will be performed in a special Jubilee concert next month.

He said: “We have been so lucky with our Queen, she is a role model of devoted service.

“The Diamond Jubilee is an incredible celebration to a life devoted to her country. I am in admiration to what she has done and how she has given herself completely to her.

“I think we are very lucky as a country to have that as a model and a system of government. She represents so much to us.”

The society is the second musical group in the area to pen a score to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Composer Benjamin Till has written a piece for Hampstead based-choir, the Fleet Singers, which will be performed during celebrations at 7pm on Saturday, June 16 at Hampstead Town Hall in Haverstock Hill.

Each member of the 46-strong Fleet Singers choir has put forward stories from the last six decades to assist with creating the composition, entitled Songs about the Weather – 60 of years of memories.

Fleet Singers chairwoman Pam Gilby said: “We felt the Jubilee is something which a community choir can celebrate, and the response from our members to the project has been incredible.

“You learn a lot about people by hearing about their memories of the past 60 years.

“Somebody wrote about her experiences at Greenham Common. And another lady who came from the Caribbean spoke about bringing up her daughter in the terrible English cold.”

Entry to the Fleet Singers concert will take place on June 16 costs 4 and singing workshops take place from 11.30am the same day.

The Highgate Choral Society’s Jubilee concert will take place at the Barbican Centre on Sunday, June 9 at 7.30pm. Tickets from 12.
