22 February 1957: Tributes to Lord Baden Powell

Hampstead's Wolf Cubs, Boy Scouts, Senior Scouts, Girl Guides and Brownies will parade for a service commemorating the birth of Lord Baden Powell on 22 February 1857. Hampstead's mayor will take the salute in Church Row outside the church. More than 500 Girl Guides will light candles commemorating the centenary, place them in the windows of their homes and sit by them tonight.

A traditional jazz concert is to be given by Humphrey Lyttelton and his band at the third St Pancras Arts Festival which starts tomorrow. There will also be the first performance in England since 1737 of Handel's opera Alcina.

Stopped for speeding at 43mph in Fitzjohn's Avenue, a Golders Green motorist told policeman: "I'm quite sure I was, I came down there without any petrol." She is fined £4.
