A new rating system allowing residents to see whether their GP surgeries are at risk of providing poor care has been published by the government’s NHS watchdog.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has placed surgeries across the country into one of six bands, with “Band 1” representing the highest risk and “Band 6” representing the lowest risk.
It is designed to give inspectors an idea of whether surgeries are safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led.
Failings covered include long waiting times for appointments, misdiagnosis of cancer and poor care for the elderly.
In Camden, about one in five GP practices have been placed in the worst category and thus are at most risk of “providing poor quality care”.
Nationally, the ratio is one in six.
Inspectors at the CQC hope the new system will “prompt GPs to ask questions, reflect and, if appropriate, take action”, but remind residents that a poor rating “does not necessarily mean that people using the practice are at risk”.
Camden Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said the surgeries with low ratings were “a concern” but welcomed the new approach.
A spokesman said: “This data is extremely helpful in building a picture of the things that matter to patients about their local practice.
“We do have some practices in the lowest rating which is of course a concern but it is also reassuring to see that a higher percentage of practices in Camden are doing well against these indicators, almost half of GP practices in Camden are assessed as a very low priority for inspection, which is an indicator of the very high quality of primary care in Camden.
“NHS Camden CCG will work with our member practices, NHS England and the CQC to bring all practices in Camden up to the level of the very best.”
