Hundreds of appointments have been cancelled at the Royal Free and Whittington hospitals after junior doctors withdrew all care as the contract dispute continues.

The Whittington has cancelled 180 outpatient appointments over the two days and The Royal Free Trust has postponed 325 clinics and procedures.

Despite the British Medical Association calling for all doctors to walk out, 72 still went into work at the Royal Free, one quarter of the total number of junior doctors scheduled to work.

Both hospitals called in consultants and medical staff from all departments to ensure that A&E would be able to care for patients adequately.

The strike, which ended at 5pm this evening, is due to begin again at 8am tomorrow,
