The A&E at Homerton Hospital is faring well in the ‘winter crisis’, with waiting time figures making it the best performing in London.
While many NHS hospitals have been struggling for weeks to keep up with a seasonal surge in demand, Homerton is among the top four in the country.
Rather than cancelling non-emergency operations, like some hospitals over the busy season, Homerton didn’t schedule some of them in the first place.
A spokesman said: “No services have been cut, but some have been deferred allowing greater bed capacity to deal with anticipated pressures. We planned that for the first two weeks of January we deliberately only scheduled surgical procedures that were day-cases, rather those requiring inpatient stays and this approach worked well. No operations have been cancelled in January thus far as a result of the ‘winter crisis’ and outpatients have run as normal.”
