A CAMDEN secondary school has been rocked after the shock resignation of the headteacher only two years after taking on the job.

The Ham&High understands Robbie Cathcart, headteacher of boys school William Ellis on Highgate Road has quit the school leaving governors and parents reeling.

The reports have not been confirmed officially by governors at the school but the Ham&High understands teachers and the Town Hall has been informed.

His departure comes just two years after former head Richard Tanton resigned not long after it emerged the Highgate Road school was mired in half a million pounds debt following a financial gaffe by a previous bursar.

The circumstances around the departure of Mr Cathcart remain clouded in mystery but the Ham&High understands he was off school for health reasons towards the end of the summer term.

He was brought in as a 'super head' with the aim of restoring the reputation of the secondary.

It is believed chairwoman of the board of governors Fiona Millar is currently waiting to receive a formal letter of resignation before informing parents. There was no indication of any changes on the school's website. The welcome message is written by Mr Cathcart and he is still listed as the headteacher.

One William Ellis mum who had already heard the news told the Ham&High she was 'outraged'.

Ms Millar, and Mr Cathcart have declined to comment when approached by the Ham&High this week. A spokeswoman for Camden Council also refused to comment saying it was a matter for the school governors.
