“I want to offer my congratulations to Sadiq Khan on his historic victory. Sadiq’s election sends a clear message that Londoners have opted for someone who will get to grips with the challenges they face on a daily basis.

“Throughout his campaign, Sadiq has focused on the need for London to remain successful but be affordable for all who live here.

“I greatly look forward to working closely with Mayor Sadiq Khan to get our city back on track.”

The voters in Haringey and Enfield showed a clear preference for Mr Khan, giving the new Mayor 53 per cent of their votes to Mr Goldsmith’s 27 per cent.

Catherine West, Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, offered her congratulations to both Mr Khan and Ms McCartney.

She said: “Friday’s result is not only an outstanding victory for the Labour Party, it is a victory for all Londoners.

“More people voted for Sadiq Khan than any other politician in UK history. Londoners have rejected the politics of intolerance, prejudice and fear that polluted the latter stages of Mr Goldsmith’s campaign in favour of one that offers hope.

“I congratulate Sadiq and look forward to working closely with him on tackling the housing crisis crippling our city.

Ms West added: “I also congratulate Joanne McCartney for being returned as the Assembly Member for Haringey & Enfield with the largest majority in her constituency’s electoral history.”
