A HAMPSTEAD pupil is the latest person in Camden to be diagnosed with swine flu.

A Year 11 University College School student was struck down by the virus while on study leave and had not come into contact with other pupils so the school was advised to remain open. No other pupils have contracted the disease and the students have broken up this week for the summer holidays.

A UCS spokeswoman said: "He did not come into school while he was ill so the authorities decided not to close the school.

"Most schools are preparing for a possible outbreak and we have all our emergency actions in place in case we have a further outbreak in the autumn."

Other schools to have been hit include South Hampstead High School, Beckford Primary School, the Channing School, the Hall School, the Garden Suburb Infant and Junior School, Acland Burghley, Parliament Hill, South Camden Community School and Torriano Infants.

Meanwhile in Haringey, it has been confirmed no more schools will close despite almost 40 confirmed cases of swine flu in more than half the borough's schools.

The Health Protections Agency (HPA) is no longer advising closures because London is considered to have "sustained community transmission" of the virus.

"Closing schools will not help to slow the spread of the virus, as people could still be exposed to it outside the school," Haringey NHS said on its website.

Last Thursday (June 25), Camps-bourne School and the Children's Centre in Nightingale Lane reopened after closing for a week when a child tested positive for the H1N1 virus.
