The owner of a much-loved Hampstead creperie will no longer stand as a Conservative councillor in May’s council elections, claiming the party has withdrawn its support for him.
Edward de Mesquita, owner of La Crêperie de Hampstead, had been due to stand as a Tory candidate for West Hampstead ward in elections to Camden Council.
Having been selected in January to stand in West Hampstead by Camden’s Conservative Association, Mr de Mesquita has now discovered he is no longer wanted.
He said: “I don’t think they want me. For some reason they didn’t want me to stand. I’m altogether involved in trying to save my business in Hampstead. It’s a bit touch and go whether I’m going to.”
Mr de Mesquita, who has run the creperie in Hampstead High Street for more than three decades, has been forced to reduce the crepe stall’s opening hours due to an ongoing dispute with neighbouring pub, the King William IV.
The dispute began in the summer over a fridge in the pub’s garden which was used by the crepe stall.
