Just 22,000 turn up at Highbury to watch Arsenal draw 0-0 with Ipswich.

Some of those disgruntled fans confront manager Bertie Mee over his lack of forwards at the club's annual meeting two nights later. Mee was quick to defend himself.

"After 73 forwards were watched, 26 were contacted, but in many cases they were not available for transfer.

"Believe me, I would have been willing to spend £100,000 on a player if I thought he was worth it. When people say we are not looking for players they don't realise the limits which we are going to strengthen the team.

"I think we have great potential here at Arsenal - our time will come again."

1986:

Martin Hayes scores twice - to make it four in four games - as the Gunners beat Chelsea 3-1 at Highbury.

The 20-year-old turned down a move to Huddersfield last month and his manager George Graham admitted: "I was prepared to let him go, but I'm pleased he is still here."

Arsenal's best league start for half a century continues with a 1-0 home in over Sunderland at Highbury. Lee Dixon's 74th minute penalty secured the points in a low-key game after last week's mass brawl at Old Trafford.

"It was a matter of the boys trying to pick themselves up after the incident of last week," said boss George Graham. "I think they did."
