A group of Golders Green pensioners were among demonstrators who gathered in Westminster to oppose a rally by white supremacists protesting against the “Jewification of Britain”.
Around 20 far-right activists, brandishing “white pride” flags, were met by more than 100 counter-demonstrators chanting “Nazi scum off our streets” at a heavily policed demonstration in Richmond Terrace, opposite Downing Street, on Saturday.
Among the counter-demonstrators were members of the Bridge Lane Christian Fellowship from Golders Green.
The controversial demonstration, originally spearheaded by blogger Joshua Bonehill-Paine, who is currently remanded in custody charged with inciting racial hatred, was originally arranged to take place in Golders Green.
But last week police intervened to ban the protesters from Golders Green and move the demonstration to Westminster between 1pm and 2pm.
It followed weeks of campaigning from MPs and Jewish groups urging police and the government to intervene to avoid the intimidation and provocation of the Jewish community in Golders Green.
On Friday last week, the Board of Deputies of British Jews organised a day of action in Golders Green to celebrate the community spirit and unity.
Volunteers from the community and beyond came together, as part of the Golders Green Together alliance, to decorate the area in green and gold.
