Illustrious admirers of renowned Fleet Street cartoonist Mel Calman gathered for the launch of an exhibition celebrating his work, which was opened by his last editor at The Times.
Calman and Freud, at the Freud Museum in Maresfield Gardens, Hampstead, until March 16, has been curated by Mr Calman’s daughters – writer and broadcaster Stephanie Calman and novelist Claire Calman.
It was opened by Times Literary Supplement editor Sir Peter Stothard, Mr Calman’s last editor at The Times before his death in 1994. He was joined by The Times cartoonist Peter Brookes and The Daily Telegraph’s Matt Pritchett.
Mr Calman was best known for his “little man” cartoons that featured in several national newspapers including The Times and The Sunday Telegraph.
The exhibition is billed as a retrospective that focuses on his fascinations with psychiatry and depression and features some of his lesser-known works.
