Writers and doctors united last week for a discussion exploring the convergence of poetry and medicine in John Keats’ life and work.
Initially a surgeon before giving up medicine to become a poet, Keats remained fascinated with the human body until he died from tuberculosis in 1821.
Former poet laureate Sir Andrew Motion and poet Jo Shapcott talked with consultant oncologist Sam Guglani, curator of non-for-profit organisation Medicine Unboxed, ahead of the discussion at Keats House, in Keats Grove, Hampstead, last week.
Sofie Davis, interpretation officer at Keats House, said: “The speakers were on top form and the debate generated a lively discussion.”
