A fire engine was left marooned for nine hours at East Finchley Allotment, home to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s vegetable patch, after it responded to a fire on Thursday morning.

A total of four engines, and 21 firefighters were called to a fire at the allotment at Creighton Avenue, East Finchley just after 4.30am.

It took crews nearly three hours to bring the fire under control. A range of allotment sheds were destroyed by the blaze.

However according to allotment committee members, when one of the engines tried to leave the site after extinguishing the fire, it came off the side of the road leading to the site, getting stick.

They also alleged another engine was stuck behind it, but the London Fire Brigade have said this was not the case.

The Ham&High understands that Mr Corbyn’s plot on the allotment wasn’t damaged by the fire.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade confirmed the engine, from Finchley Fire Station, had been stuck at the site for a large part of today but said service hadn’t been affected: “The crews attending the incident on this fire engine were still able to use equipment carried on the appliance to help extinguish the fire.

“London Fire Brigade has well practised contingency plans in place to maintain full operational cover should any appliances be taken out of service.

“This incident has not impacted on the Brigade’s response to attend emergency’s across the capital.”
