POLICE cordoned off part of Hampstead Heath this afternoon after engineers uncovered what the believed to be an unexploded Second World War bomb.

Engineers working in the area found what they thought was an unexploded bomb at 3.30pm this afternoon (Wednesday) and police were called to the incident.

East Heath Road was closed and a 150m cordon was set up around the site.

However, on further investigation, it was discovered they had actually uncovered an empty mortar bomb.

The object was taken away and police are currently in the process of reopening the area.
