AN unemployed Crouch End man has been found guilty of cashpoint robberies in the Broadway.

Robert Keavey, 30, of Weston Park, targeted a man and a woman, Wood Green Crown Court heard.

He was also convicted after a six-day trial on February 18 of an attempted robbery on another woman at an ATM.

In the first incident, a 42-year-old woman was attacked at 8.30pm as she withdrew 40 from Lloyds bank on August 26 2008.

Keavey and an accomplice grabbed her by the wrists and head before stealing the cash and fleeing.

On September 3 2008, a 43-year-old man was robbed at 9pm as he withdraw cash at Nationwide.

Again Keavey and an accomplice grabbed him from behind, threatened him and then ran off with 20 cash.

Then two days later, a 23-year-old woman was returning from a night out and asked a taxi driver to stop at the Lloyds ATM on the Broadway at 3.30am.

Keavey grabbed her but she broke free and ran back into the taxi. He followed her and a struggle ensued.

The woman managed to kick him out of the vehicle and he escaped empty-handed. The taxi driver then flagged down a passing police car.

But Keavey was arrested at 4.40am the same day on suspicion of burglary after an attempted break-in at a restaurant in Middle Lane. He was stopped in Middle Lane Mews.

While in custody, Keavey was identified as matching the description of the suspect involved in the cashpoint robberies. The burglary charge was later dropped.

He will be sentenced at Wood Green Crown Court on March 18.

Jagdish Patel, whose own store JD Jakes in Weston Park was burgled in January in an unrelated incident, said: "I'm glad that someone has been caught for those robberies.

"I think it may put people off committing crimes now that someone has been caught."

Crouch End councillor David Winskill said: "It is always good news when police manage to apprehend someone who has been responsible for a series of crimes.

"Cashpoint robberies were a real problem in Crouch End last year and councillors did quite a lot of work with the Safer Neighbourhood Teams to try to find the solution.

"The best solution is to find the criminals and it's good news that this chap has been convicted."

Police are still trying to trace Keavey's accomplice in relation to the robberies on August 26 and September 3.
