Swiss Cottage tube station is likely to be closed for several hours tonight after the escalators stopped working.

The gates were closed this afternoon and passengers advised to walk or catch a bus to Finchley Road station, half a mile away, or St John's Wood, a mile in the other direction.

''It's got nothing to do with the weather,'' said an attendant. ''There is a problem with the escalators. The Jubilee Line is running normally and all the other stations are open.''

Updates later.
