The third burst water pipe in West Hampstead in less than a month left 140 homes without water yesterday.

A four-inch pipe at the junction of Finchley Road and Queen’s Terrace burst at around 5.30am, forcing Finchley Road underground station to close temporarily and suspending the Metropolitan Line service between Baker Street and Aldgate.

The burst pipe also disrupted traffic while Thames Water repaired the damage.

The pipe was fixed at around 7.30am, restoring water supplies, and a good service resumed on the Metropolitan line service.

A spokesperson from Thames Water said: “Our engineers have been working to repair a four-inch water pipe which burst at around 5.30am this morning on the junction of Finchley Road and Queen’s Terrace. This has now been fixed.

“We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this caused.”

Angela Back, general manager of the Metropolitan line, said: “Metropolitan line tunnels near Baker Street were subjected to significant water ingress requiring structural inspections to be carried out.

“I apologise to customers for delays to their journeys this morning, and can assure them that we are as frustrated as anyone at being unable to provide our regular service.”
