The application for the redevelopment of Mansfield Bowling Club were last night thrown out by the Camden planning committee.

The controversial decision had been delayed by Camden Council’s Development Control Committee but last night’s meeting voted overwhelmingly against the plans.

Patrick Lefevre, chairman of the Dartmouth Park Conservation Area Advisory Committee attended the meeting.

“All three local councillors spoke out against the proposals,” he said. “When the plans were rejected there was a feeling of absolute elation.”

Cllr Sally Gimson spoke out against the proposals at the meeting and condemned the contradictions in the development discussions.

She said: “If there is no need for leisure facilities on this site, why is there £600,000 on the table to mitigate its loss? I urge you to turn this down as smartly as you did last time when it was on the table.”

The plans involved knocking down the former Mansfield Bowling Club building in Dartmouth Park and build 21 homes, a sports pavillion and a community garden on the 100-year-old bowling green.

More than 150 people objected to the plans but Camden planning officers previously recommended that councillors approve the application for planning permission, on the condition that developer Generator Group pays £600,000 towards local sports facilities.
