In times past, Londoners would escape to Highgate from the centre of the capital to breathe in the clean air, and enjoy the health benefits of its green surroundings.

As part of this year's Highgate Festival, one of the big focuses will be on "eco-Highgate" - appreciating what is around in the Village, while ensuring generations in the future can enjoy it.

From Waterlow Park to Highgate Wood, the area has plenty on offer for people to feel in touch with nature.

Plant Stories, which will take place at Lux on June 16, will examine our relationship with the plants we know best, those around our homes.

You are invited to bring along one of your own potted plants, and talk about its origin, its role in the house and your feelings about it.

The session, which begins at 2pm, is led by Sonya Schonbergen, a current Goethe Institut artist at Lux.

There will also be plenty of chances to enjoy other people's leaves, stems and flowers, as well as your own.

Fitzroy Park Allotments is open to the public on June 23. It will give people the chance to have a tour of the 80-plot site, which encompasses a variety of wildlife along with the plants.

Another green space on show is the garden at Omved. Nestled below Highgate High Street, it has been transformed from a tarmacked area to an "eco habitat" with a wildflower meadow, orchard and vegetable garden. It will be open for the duration of the festival between 10am and 5pm.

Locals can also discover Haringey's hidden River Moselle, which runs the breadth of the borough, with its source being in Queen's Wood.

The walk, on June 20, will be given by local guide Jen Pedler.

It will follow the course from Queen's Wood to Bruce Castle in Tottenham.

Eventually the river meets the River Lea in Tottenham Hale, but the walk will stop short of the confluence.

The Highgate Festival will run from June 14 until June 23, with a variety of events in the area, from music performances, an open air church service and the return of Fair in the Square. It's the second time the festival has taken place, and has an expanded programme this year.
