A consultation has been launched on plans to bring a specialist school for young people with autism to Haringey.
The Grove School would open initially in September with primary-age students in temporary accommodation at St Mary’s Primary School in Hornsey, before the secondary-age cohort move with them to the former Haringey Professional Development Centre building in Downhills Park Road next year.
The scheme for the school, will be funded by the Department for Education and supported by Haringey Council, has been drawn up by the Heartlands Community Trust, which runs Heartlands High School in Wood Green.
The school hopes to attract students from areas such as Highgate and Muswell Hill.
Lucia Santi, who is ‘principal designate’ for the proposed school, said: “Students in our school will have access to a team of skilled teachers, visiting therapists, and professionals who work together to ensure each child has a learning programme tailored to their specific needs.
“Families are offered the support and advice they need to feel confident and informed about their child’s needs and future prospects.
“We are committed to working closely with our mainstream colleagues to share good practice across our school and others within the trust. Central to this partnership is our commitment to working alongside our parents and carers to support the progress and well-being of our students.
“We look forward to working alongside our families to ensure the very best outcomes for our students here at The Grove and welcome your feedback.”
There will be a drop-in session at Heartlands High School in Station Road on Thursday, March 1 at either 10am to 11am or 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
A spokesman for the Heartlands Community Trust added: “The school has become an extremely popular choice with parents in a short space of time, with both the main school and autism provision now oversubscribed.
“Despite our success to date, we strongly believe in providing further opportunities to students in the local area, ensuring each and every child receives superb educational guidance, regardless of age, background or disability.”
The consultation survey – found at thegroveschool.co.uk – closes at 5pm on Wednesday 14.
