St Anthony’s School for Girls has hosted its first “Whole Day of Reading” event in celebration of National Storytelling Week.

The day saw pupils at the Golders Green school bringing in their favourite novels and joining staff in scheduled reading sessions.

A highlight of the day was a visit from children’s author, Lou Kuenzler, who gave Year 3 students an insight into storytelling while reading from one of her Bella Broomstick novels.

The girls were instructed to think of their pencils as magic wands and to imagine similes as magic felt-tip pens that draw pictures with their words. Further fun came from the girls experimenting with alliteration and coming up with phrases such as “whizzing wasps, sugary snakes and squatting squirrels”.

Head Teacher Laura Martin said: “The girls, and even the staff had a wonderful day exploring the joys of reading and they have learnt some invaluable lessons.

“It was incredibly kind of Lou to sign some of her books for the girls after a story reading with reception.”
