The performance of primary schools across Camden and Barnet in last summer’s national curriculum exams was revealed last week, when annual government league tables were published.

The Department for Education (DfE) published Key Stage 2 results for every UK state primary school showing 79 per cent of pupils nationwide reached the expected level four in English and maths, while in Camden it was 85 per cent and in Barnet 83 per cent.

Holy Trinity and Saint Silas CofE Primary School, in Hartland Road, Camden Town, was the most successful in Camden, with 100 per cent of pupils achieving level four or above in English and maths.

In Barnet, the top primary was Menorah school, in The Drive, Golders Green, where 100 per cent of pupils also achieved level four or above.

Cllr Angela Mason, Camden Council’s cabinet member for children, said: “We don’t have a school which has below 70 per cent of pupils achieving level four and above in maths and English.

“I think it shows that the gap between the highest and lowest achieving schools in Camden is lower than elsewhere in London.”

Cllr Andrew Harper, Barnet Council’s cabinet member for education, children and families, said: “I am delighted that Barnet’s pupils have once again achieved some excellent results which continue to improve each year.

“These results are testament to the hard work of teachers and pupils.”

The most improved primary school in Camden was Beckford Primary, in Dornfell Street, West Hampstead, where 88 per cent of pupils achieved the benchmark in English and maths – up 29 per cent on last year.

Beckford headteacher Samantha Smith said: “We’ve always achieved very highly in English. It was our maths that was a bit lower. This year we worked with the children to build their resilience so they could apply what they knew of maths when it came to tests.

“We are delighted with how they’ve done. The pupils have been brilliant.”

At the bottom of the Camden league table was Netley Primary School, in William Road, Euston, with 70 per cent of pupils achieving the expected standard in English and maths.

In order to tackle the school’s underperformance, Camden Council recently appointed Bavaani Nanthabalan, headteacher at Torriano Junior School, in Kentish Town, as Netley’s executive headteacher.

Cllr Mason added: “She is responsible for Torriano School, which is an outstanding school. The idea is that she will bring all her great experience and knowledge to help bring Netley back to an outstanding school.”
