Pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic primary school showed off their ICT skills during a visit from the Premier of Nova Scotia last week.

Stephen McNeil took a tour of the school on Highgate Hill with Karen Casey, the Canadian province’s Minister of Education and Early Development, to see how well the school integrates ICT and computing into the curriculum.

Pupils have used Beebot robots creatively to help them learn about subjects including space and the Chinese New Year.

During the visit, Year 4 students showed how they used algorithms to instruct a friend to make a cheese sandwich and Year 5 showed how to implement the use of the Scratch programming language in maths. The Raspberry Pi club also demonstrated the Sonic Pi microcomputer.

Headteacher Clare McFlynn said: “It was an inspirational morning and an opportunity to celebrate our use of digital technology and computing in front of our distinguished guests.”

The Premier said that he hadn’t been in a better school environment for years and the education minister said that they would take back many ideas.
