Maria Fidelis Gospel Choir sings for Pope

MEMBERS of an award-winning Camden school choir performed for the Pope this morning, on the second day of his state visit to the UK.

The Maria Fidelis Convent School Gospel Choir was chosen to sing for Pope Benedict XVI after being named as Senior Choir of the Year in the BBC Songs of Praise competition earlier this year.

Maria Fidelis was the only secondary school to perform at The Big Assembly for the Pope. It was held at St Mary’s College in Twickenham this morning for 4,000 school children from across the UK.

The Somers Town girls’ school erected screens in classrooms so that pupils could watch the televised concert live.

Anita Money, a specialist school administrator at the school, said: “We’re all frightfully proud. We put big screens up in the classrooms so that the girls could watch our choir and the concert.”

Lyn Newell assistant headteacher said: “We are honoured to have been chosen by the Catholic Education Service of England and Wales to sing for His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI during his state visit.”
